The connection between interior design techniques and mental health is well known. There’s lots of research that indicates the influence of interior design elements on mood and health. Colour, the use of space, natural lighting, plants and flowers, artwork, and room organisation can elevate mood, reduce negative emotions and promote calmness and a feeling of wellbeing.
These are my three favourite design techniques for optimum mental health:
1. Incorporate as much natural light into your space as possible
Sunlight is an extremely important factor in our everyday mood. Sunlight boosts our happy hormones and reduces negative energy. Your interior designer should pay attention to the space’s aspect, window coverings, and furniture location to help to maximise interaction with natural light.
2. Understand your personal style colour palette
Work with an interior designer to discover the colour palette that speaks to your personal style, calms your senses and lightens your mood. We’re all different and while greens and blues are proven to have a calming effect, the shades and hues that work for you will be unique.
3. Work with the flow of your space
The best thing about great room organisation is that you don’t even notice it! Your interior designer learns about you, your lifestyle and needs and helps you design the space that fits. The flow of the space, the organisation of furniture and furnishings go hand in hand with colour palette to create a space where you can be your best self.
